:: domain names
It used to be non profit organizations limited themselves primarily to domain names with a dot org (.org) extension. Dot Com (.com) extensions were for businesses… and so on. Such categorizations no longer matter that much and today there are quite a few extensions to choose from. Often an organization will procure many domain names with their name or acronym. At United Way we did that. Here are some of the domain names we own:
uwtb.org
uwtb.com
unitedwaytampabay.com
unitedwayoftampabay.com
If you type any of those into your browser you will end up at our site.
The best way to explore what domain names will work for you is at a domain registration site. There are many. Again, I use GODADDY.COM mainly because it works the best for me. If you click on that link you will be able to enter domain names you are interested in. You will be informed if the name you want is available. If it isn’t, try variations of the name or try something completely different (but relevant to your organization). GO DADDY has some helps on that page to assist you in finding an available name. Once you find it, you can buy it (for cheap) for an annual fee. Just process the name through the checkout and it will be yours.
The management of the Domain will be at GODADDY, but you can change that if you want. That part is a little tricky but if you follow the instructions provided you can figure it out.
